Which scrape suits you is not something you can decide on paper – only on the instrument. This offer puts both styles side by side and adds a staple lower section so you can try the pitch adjustment straight away.

Long or short scrape – what's the difference?

Long-scrape reeds respond with noticeably less lip pressure. The embouchure tires more slowly, which makes a real difference during long practice sessions and long rehearsals – and especially when the embouchure is still developing or fixed braces are involved.

Short-scrape reeds respond more directly and give you more immediate control over the sound. This is the style common across Europe and the one most oboists know from their lessons.

Neither style is better than the other – it comes down to which one suits your embouchure, your instrument and the way you play day to day.

Why a staple lower section is included

Chiarugi's two-part staples consist of an upper section, onto which the reed is tied, and an interchangeable lower section. Different lengths let you play the same reed at a higher or lower pitch. With the lower section included here, you can test that effect on your own reeds right away.

Materials & making

Every reed is made by hand in the traditional way from hand-selected, seasoned cane (Arundo donax) from southern France, on precision staples by Chiarugi.

Every reed is handled with particular care throughout the making process:

• thorough cleaning after each working step
• gentle hygienic treatment after test-playing

Looking after your reeds

To keep your reeds working well for as long as possible:

• for the first two days, play a new reed for only about one minute at a time, in the range f′ to f″
• after rehearsals and concerts, let the reeds dry in the open case
• clean gently when needed and air the reeds regularly
